Choosing key features of your home can be difficult, and there can be a lot of things to be considered. One thing that is essential in our homes, is blinds and curtains, however choosing which one is right for you can actually require some careful consideration. It’s important to think about what matters most to you, for example privacy, keeping in the heat, or design. Blinds and curtains each have many different qualities, and there are lots of different types available in each, so it really does come down to your own personal preferences and requirements.
To help you along with the decision, we wanted to talk about a few points of each.
Insulation
When it comes to curtains, one of the best things about them is insulation. They tend to be a lot thicker than blinds, and not only that, but the coverage of windows is significantly better, which therefore prevents any drafts from seeping through. This is perfect for living rooms, as it makes the place feel more cosy and relaxing.
This doesn’t mean that blinds can’t insulate a room well, however. There are lots of different styles of blinds available, but some, such as thermal blinds, thicker types like blackout blinds, or roman blinds that still do an exceptional job of keeping the heat in.
Lighting
The best option for you and your lighting, depends on what matters most to you. For example, do you want complete blackout? Easy access in controlling how much light gets into the room? Depending on this, you can be advised on the best option for you. If it’s more control and options that you want, then blinds such as venetian and vertical blinds would be perfect for you, as they are very easily adjustable and allow you to have them exactly how you want them.
With curtains, you don’t have quite as much freedom and choice. Nevertheless, you can get all kinds of different curtains with different levels of thickness that can match your preferences on how much light is blocked out of the room. They also aren’t quite as adjustable as blinds, the only way you can really control the lighting is by how much you open them. If this becomes a privacy issue when you open them fully, you can actually get an underlayer that goes across the window, still letting the light through but whilst preventing people on the outside from being able to see into your house.
Design
The possibilities with design are pretty much endless. Once you have decided which practical qualities matter most to you, you can then run wild with all of the design options that are available to you. From colours to styles, you can pretty much find whatever it is you are looking for to complete the design of your home perfectly.
Functionality
Although the purpose of all blinds and curtains is virtually the same, they do all vary slightly in the way that they function and can be controlled. For example, adjustability. Some, like curtains or roman blinds, simply open and close, whereas others like venetian and wooden blinds, can be altered very specifically to allow as much exposure and light as preferred. Again, this is quite a significant aspect to consider when choosing between blinds and curtains. Blinds have a far wider array of functionality, and so if this is important to you, they may be a better option than curtains.
