To measure your windows for new curtains you require:
- A metal tape measure.
- A pen and paper to note down the sizes.

To make sure that you will get the best possible fit, it is essential to measure your windows carefully and decide whether you want your curtains to hang from a pole or from a track. In both cases, these should be fitted 15 cm above the window and extended 15-20cm on both sides. It is important to fit the poles and tracks before taking the curtain measurements.

Measuring curtains for tracks and poles

If you are installing a track for your curtains, measure from the top of the track.
As for measuring curtains for poles, measure from the very top of the pole and from the small bottom ring at the bottom of each curtain ring in order to avoid the rings or pole from being covered by the curtain.

Measuring the length and width of your curtains

Start by measuring the total width of the pole or track and do not take the measurements of the window, unless it is wall-to-wall. Remember to allow for overlap – usually, 2.5cm. This will allow the hanging curtain to overlap in the middle when you close them.
Before you continue with measuring the length, would you prefer your curtain to fall to the floor, to the sill or below the sill?

- Allow 1.5cm from the floor – for floor length curtains.
- Allow 1.25cm above the sill – for sill length curtains.
- Allow 15cm below the sill finish – for curtains that fall below the sill.
