Curtains can make or break a room. As long as you choose well, they will completely transform the appearance of your home for the better, however if you don’t pick a good match, they might not look so great! If you go for curtains over blinds, you’re going more for style over function. Blinds tend to be quite small and compact and very plain looking, whereas curtains definitely stand out more and can have a real impact on the way the room looks. Because this is a pretty big decision to make, we wanted to give you a few pointers on some of the things you should be considering when looking to buy new curtains for your home.
Do they allow you enough privacy?
The job of curtains is to essentially provide privacy (and divert light, of course). So, it’s important to consider how well particular types curtains will work in your home from this point of view. There are a lot of styles to choose form, and you can get some pretty clear and thin styles of curtains. Although these may look nice and be chosen more for the purpose of appearance, they might not necessarily be the most practical option. Sometimes it’s better to go for something a little more bold to ensure that they do the job properly. So, are your curtains based more on looking nice in the house, or allowing you the right mount of privacy?
How much light coverage you want?
As we briefly mentioned above, you can pretty much go from one extreme to the other with curtains. Some are very thin and light and designed more so for decoration, however with others, they can be very thick and heavy and give full coverage of the window and keep out a lot of light. You can even get blackout lining, which is great for bedrooms, or perhaps if you have something like a cinema room. This ensures more or less total and complete darkness when they are closed.
What length?
Some keep it simple and literally just have the curtains there to cover up windows, however if you’re looking to add a fancy, luxurious feel to the room, we’d encourage you to opt for full length curtains. These can become a real focal point of the room and make it look very sophisticated and classy. However, it has to be said, these aren’t always the most practical option as they do require quite a bit of maintenance in order to keep them looking neat and tidy.
Go big and bold
Curtains are notorious for having lots of weird and wonderful patterns. Sometimes this is what’s needed in an otherwise pretty plain room in order to mix things up a little. Going for something with lots of patterns, or bright colours, or some with a decorative trim on them, can do the world of good for the design of your home.
Finding the right curtain pole
Now as we’ve established, curtains can look very luxurious, however the curtain pole can be another big statement in your home. They are a feature that stands out quite a lot, and it gives you the chance to make the room look really classy.
